AES Energy Storage Services

AES Energy Storage has proven the ability to deliver scalable, high value, emissions-free capacity through advanced energy storage projects. Our primary focus is reserve and peak capacity for the utility, generator, or load-serving entity.

Our projects provide complimentary benefits such as ancillary services, deferred scaling, decremental capacity, voltage regulation, fuel diversity, elimination of water usage, and deferred transmission benefits, all with no direct emissions.

Similar to a wind or solar PPA, AES Energy Storage will deliver these services under long-term contract to the utility, avoiding costly technology bets for the ratepayer.  Additionally, the utility will gain access to AES Energy Storage’s purchasing power, storage project expertise, and patented control platform.

Our services are best described by application for customer segments below:

Capacity Release for Generators

AES Energy Storage projects allow power plant owners to improve capacity factor by releasing existing reserve capacity. By using an advanced storage system in lieu of reserved thermal plant capacity, generators can fully optimize their energy output and allow an AES system to satisfy required spinning reserve capacity. This reserve capacity has greater flexibility in response to market signals, can be scaled to any size requirement and is delivered from an emissions-free facility.

Reserve Capacity for Utilities and Load Serving Entities (LSEs)

LSEs looking to hedge their regulation service requirement have historically been forced to take prices in the volatile spot market. AES Energy Storage will sign bilateral contracts with LSEs in the NYISO, PJM and ERCOT markets that want to hedge their exposure to regulation prices with fixed or indexed pricing mechanisms.

Capacity and Reliability for T&D Utilities

Each utility has different geographic and operational constraints that are unique to their system.  Each AES energy storage project is analyzed to maximize the benefits whether these involve off-peak power management, renewable integration, fast response operating reserves, or locational transmission benefits through targeted deployments.  An AES Energy Storage Project is:

-      Firm Capacity of a peaking power resource with no direct emissions or water usage and with energy priced at off-peak rates.

-      Operational flexibility superior to a pumped hydro, located near the load center.

-      Emissions reduction equivalent to adding solar PV or wind in the region.

-      Contracted resource that avoids an upfront capital commitment and insulates ratepayers from technology risk.
