AES Energy Storage is exploring a number of technologies to support emissions-free capacity and has a growing list of business relationships, including A123 Systems, Samsung SDI and Altairnano. Because components are modular, primarily constructed in a factory, and non-hazardous, energy storage systems can be deployed rapidly without the multi-year cycles typically associated with grid-scale projects.
Patented control engineering:
AES Energy Storage applies patented performance algorithms in its sOS™ control platform. This proprietary storage operating system optimizes the use of all energy storage technologies we deploy and delivers superior value for the customers and markets we serve.
Grid speed and efficiency:
Energy storage for the electric grid is analogous to memory chips in computers and networks. Matching supply and demand on the grid in real time without these “memory chips” is inefficient and expensive. Battery technologies provide a cost-effective, instantaneous and precise matching between supply and demand on the grid, essentially buffering the system in much the same way memory chips throughout the Internet keep the information flowing efficiently.
Solution Development Team:
The Solution Development team within AES Energy Storage is tasked with combining these utility industry issues with new technology solutions. In addition to working on advances from our established suppliers, we are also working closely with above-ground compressed air and sodium-ion technology companies funded by the DOE Promising Technologies grant program.
Tech Perspectives Blog:
AES Energy Storage was established in 2007 as a result of AES' initial survey of advances in battery technology for electric vehicles. We continue to survey and validate the R&D work and development plans for several technologies.
